Getting to Tribeca From JFK, LaGuardia and Newark
Tribeca sits at the bottom of Manhattan, which makes it one of the more straightforward parts of the city to reach from JFK and Newark, and the least straightforward from LaGuardia. Here is how each works, with the times we would quote a guest rather than a timetable.
The short answer
- JFK: 50 to 70 minutes. AirTrain to Jamaica, then the A train to Fulton Street or Chambers Street.
- Newark: 45 to 70 minutes. AirTrain to Newark Airport station, NJ Transit to Penn Station, then a downtown train or a taxi.
- LaGuardia: 35 to 60 minutes by taxi, longer in traffic. Transit involves a bus and a transfer, which is why most guests take a car.
From JFK
Take the AirTrain from your terminal to Jamaica Station, then the A train toward Manhattan and get off at Fulton Street. From there it is about eight minutes on foot to the hotel. The whole journey costs less than a taxi and is not much slower outside rush hour. With heavy luggage and two or more people, a car is often the better value.
From Newark
The AirTrain connects the terminals to the NJ Transit station, and NJ Transit runs into Penn Station in about twenty-five minutes. From Penn, take the 1, 2 or 3 downtown to Chambers Street, which puts you two minutes from the door. A taxi from Newark is subject to the tunnel toll and the Holland Tunnel traffic, which is unpredictable in the evening.
From LaGuardia
There is no rail link. The Q70 bus connects the terminals to the subway at Jackson Heights, and from there it is a long ride downtown with at least one transfer. In practice a taxi or a car service is what most guests do, at around 35 to 50 minutes depending on the hour.
Which stations serve Tribeca
- Chambers Street on the 1, 2 and 3 — two minutes from the hotel
- Chambers Street on the A and C — three minutes
- City Hall on the R and W — four minutes
- Brooklyn Bridge–City Hall on the 4, 5 and 6 — six minutes
- Fulton Street for the 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, J and Z, plus the Oculus and the PATH to New Jersey — eight minutes
What it costs, roughly
- AirTrain plus subway from JFK: about $11 per person.
- AirTrain plus NJ Transit from Newark: about $20 per person.
- Taxi from JFK: a flat fare plus tolls and tip.
- Taxi from Newark: metered, plus the tunnel toll.
For one traveler with a carry-on, transit wins on cost. For two or more with checked bags, the difference narrows to the point where a car is usually worth it.
If you land late
The AirTrain and the subway run overnight, but the connections thin out after midnight and a missed transfer can add half an hour. If your flight lands after eleven, book a car through the hotel and skip the puzzle.
Arriving at Smyth Tribeca
The entrance is at 85 West Broadway, between Chambers and Warren. If you are arriving by car, ask the driver for West Broadway rather than Broadway, which is a different street two blocks east. Contact the hotel if you would like the front desk to arrange a car, and see our rooms before you book.
